Call for Application: A Learning Route on “Production and market linkages for sustainable development” in Vietnam

1. The Learning Route

The Learning Route is considered as a successful tool in capacity development through a continuous process of “training in the field” organized thematically around successful experiences and best practices on innovative rural and local development in which local actors themselves become trainers.

In the frame of the ROUTASIA Programme, PROCASUR is supporting knowledge management and capacity building strategies for scaling up best practices and innovations for poverty reduction among IFAD stakeholders in the Asia and Pacific Region.

The Learning Route in Ninh Thuan “Production and market linkages for sustainable development” is based on practical experience of project Agriculture, Farmers and Rural Areas Support Project (TNSP) in Ninh Thuan Province in strengthening the cooperation of production groups and market linkages to sustainably improve livelihoods among ethnic minority and rural poor households.

The path of knowledge Ninh Thuan is a part of the program “Strengthening Knowledge Sharing and Scaling-up of Sustainable Innovation using the Learning Route methodology” (ROUTASIA) financed by IFAD. The program aims to support knowledge management and capacity building to replicate the best practices and initiatives in reducing poverty among IFAD projects in Asia and the Pacific. The program is supported by technical experts from organizations Procasur.

2. Learning Route’s objectives

The main objective of the Learning Route is to analyze and disseminate the best practices and innovations in pro-poor rural development and sustainable business, in order to promote their scaling-up at larger scale in Vietnam.

Specific objectives of the Learning Route are the followings:

To identify best practices, innovative solutions and lessons learned in pro-poor rural development;

To analyse sustainable business models to enhance food security, diversify livelihoods and promote income-generating activities for poor households;

» To recognize the interlinks between communities’ internal organizations and external factors in the market;
» To extract lessons on the main strategic steps taken by communities in the process of developing sustainable business, including cooperation and negotiations with local governmental authorities and partner institutions;
» To strengthen policy dialogue and to promote the role of public sector and private sector in developing and facilitating pro-poor PPP programs.

A Learning Route is a continuous process of “training in the field” organized thematically around successful experiences and best practices on innovative rural and local development in which local actors themselves become trainers. Through workshops, group works, case studies, interviews, conversations and other activities in the field, the Learning Route generates a space for individual and collective learning for visitors and hosts.

3. Host Experiences – Quang Ninh Farm

Quang Ninh Farm (My Phong Village, Hai Thanh Commune, Ninh Hai district, Ninh Thuan province), produce major agricultural productions of the Ninh Thuan province, including garlic, grapes, apples and onion. Since 2011, the product of Quang Ninh Farm are produced in accordance with good manufacturing practice quality standard – VietGAP. In 2014, the farm has expanded to more than 10 ha, and having business with 10 local farms to  produce  onion, garlic, grapes, apples meeting VietGAP standards. The model has yield revenue from VND 50 million in 2009 to nearly VND 2 billion in 2014. Major clients of Quang Ninh farm are large supermarkets such as Metro, Coopmart, Maximark, Lotte … Currently,  Quang Ninh trading Company Ltd. is ranked in the top 100 suppliers of agricultural products in Vietnam.

Being innovative and dedicated to his community, Mr Tan –  Quang Ninh ranchers is planning new projects to enhance the value of local agricultural products, and help the poor households in local increase their living standard.

Established for only two years, Quang Ninh farm members are pleased with their past joint achievements and looking forward positively on their successful track.

The learning exchange is a chance to enhance analytical skills of participants; by reflecting on current rural development practices, participants would be able to identify alternatives for addressing opportunities and challenges in their own context. Furthermore, the Learning Route is expected to strength networking among participants and their institutions/organizations.

 

4. Location and dates

The Learning Route will have place from Tuesday 27th to Thursday 29th January 2015 in Phan Rang – Thap Cham city of Ninh Thuan province.

 

5. Participants’ profile

Public and private rural and agriculture development practitioners from different districts of Ninh Thuan  are welcomed in the Learning Route and particularly: (a) IFAD project staff and public sector at the provincial level; (b) farmers’ economic and social organizations; (c) local government officials, and (d) the journalists interested in the field of agriculture and rural development.
