Report on Learning Route, “Boosting the Contribution of Value Chain Development to Gender Justice and Pro-poor Wealth Creation: the Gender Action Learning System (GALS)”
This is a technical report on the Learning Route held from the 23rd November -1st of December 2015 in Uganda, targeting two IFAD development partners from the Republic of Sudan, BIRDP and WISRM.
The goal of the LR was to build technical capacities in using the GALS (Gender Action Learning System) methodology ( building a vision, an empowerment map, identifying challenging actions) within the practice of the two organizations. In this way it was aimed to promote gender respect, collaboration and equality within farmers of the animal and crop value chains.
The overall activities acknowledged the GALS methodology as an effective tool to stimulate both reflection and action pro gender equality. Some key lessons learned from both cases included: an enhanced communication in the community which allows addressing a diversity of situations both at the household and group levels ( like physical disabilities and polygamy); holistically and successfully addressing the different dimensions of gender inequality, from access to land to decision making to division of labor. Quickly spreading community and resource management changes through peer sharing, specially among men.
