Managing forests, sustaining lives, improving livelihoods of indigenous peoples and ethnic groups in the Mekong region, Asia. Lessons learned from the Learning Route

The Learning Route, ‘Managing Forests, Sustaining Lives, Improving Livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples and Ethnic Groups in the Mekong Region’, carried out in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and Thailand in November 2012, was an initiative promoted and implemented by PROCASUR Corporation and the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), with the full support of the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

This endeavour would not have been possible without the active participation and invaluable contributions of the communities of Huay Hang and Napor in Lao PDR and Huay Hin Lad Nai in Thailand, as well as their local leaders. In addition to hosting the Learning Route delegation, these communities and organizations made the Learning Route successful by eagerly sharing their local knowledge and experience. Special thanks go to the government of Sangthong District in Lao PDR for the institutional support, and to the Gender and Development Association, AIPP’s member and partner-organization in Lao PDR, for collaboration during the preparation and implementation of the Learning Route, as well as for the inputs provided for this study. Gratitude is also expressed to the IFAD Programme in Lao PDR and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives in Thailand for the assistance provided in organizing the panel sessions held in, respectively, Vientiane City on 13 November and Chiang Mai on 17 November.
